Thirty-nine-year-old Ryan Reynolds is famous worldwide due to the romantic parts he played in The Proposal and in Definitely, Maybe, but the leading parts he played in the action movies such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern also put him under the spotlight. In 2016, he was the superhero of the moment in Deadpool, a film that mocks the role of the hero as the ‘man-perfect’. However, Ryan Reynolds actually has a little touch of perfection.
Married to the eternal Gossip Girl Serena Van Der Woodsen, one of the greatest fashion icons worldwide, they are already parents of little James and are expecting a second child, which will make them fill the Brangelina (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) gap in the North Americans’ hearts. An important North American publication recently elected Reynolds the world’s most stylish man and he is filling the position of global ambassador of the Swiss watches and jewelry brand Piaget.
At the launch of the Piaget Polo S line of watches in New York, Reynolds talked about his lifestyle, his family and the wish to visit Brazil.
An American publication elected you the most stylish man in the world. How do you define your style?
I really like classical clothes like the black-tie suit that I wear when I have an important event like the Academy Awards or the Golden Globes. I never ran (laughs), but I have already presented some awards on a few occasions. I like picking something classical and add a personal touch. For men it is a little harder because in a black-tie event you have to go black-tie. I always try inserting color somehow, but we do not have many options to choose.
Do you count on a personal stylist help?
Not always. I like fashion. When I am touring promoting movies, I have a stylist but on my everyday life or events, I do not get any help. It is the cool part of the job. I love it.
Do you have any styling rule? We do not see you wearing prints or strong colors, for example.
I have no rules. I do wear prints in summer shirts, for example. I want to be able to look at the pictures in ten years from now and do not think I look awful. This is why I prefer a more classical style but I actually have no limits. I would wear a pink shirt if I thought it looked cool.
There are so many new references in men’s fashion: singers Drake and Justin Bieber, international fashion designers that bring new tendencies every season and the list goes on. How can you keep yourself so faithful to your own style, not getting too involved with the information avalanche that surround us?
I absolutely do get this influence! When I see a singer wearing a hat, I think it looks cool but it has nothing to do with my personal style. Musicians have more freedom concerning fashion. What I want is to have my own signature. I use as a reference old icons like Jimmy Stewart e Cary Grant. Their style will last forever. When I watch their movies of 50 years ago, I think “I would wear this today”.
If you were packing for a five-day trip to Brazil, what would you bring?
In my handbag, I would bring my Olear Brown shorts. A suit to go out in the evening with my wife. Every time we travel together, we like to dress up and go out for dinner. However, we do not dress up only for others. We dress for each other. She loves dressing up and so do I. In addition to that, it would only pack shirts and basic pieces. I have never been to Brazil, what a shame! I have travelled a lot and I know that Brazil is one of the funniest places on the planet. However, I have not been there yet.
Being elegant is something that seems natural to you. Is there any piece you would not wear?
Even though I swim, I do not like shorts or breeches too much. I would never wear cargo shorts. When I see men wearing those they look so comfortable, but they are not for me. In the summer for example, I prefer wearing light linen pants. When I was younger, I got tattoos in my leg and I would rather not show them (laughs)!
Now you are the ambassador of a brand that is almost 150 years old. How do you incorporate tradition in your lifestyle today?
These things are important. I am a family man. I like keeping the pieces that meant something for my grandfather, for example. I have a helmet and a watch that belonged to him. I like to keep a piece that belonged to the members of my family after they are gone. Everything that is timeless is elegant and it means a lot to me. I try to bring a touch of this to everything I do publicly. If I were to stay at home, I would wear my pajamas for two days (laughs)!
